Stress, an erratic lifestyle, travelling or spoiled food are possible factors disturbing the intestinal microbiota. A joint report published by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) mentions several complaints such as abdominal pain, constipation and diarrhoea, which are directly linked to a disturbed microbiota. The report
also includes allergy, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), cardiovascular diseases and vaginal infections as problems which can indirectly be linked to an intestinal microbiota disturbance1. The advice given by the FAO and WHO: “the application of probiotics to prevent and treat these disorders
should be more widely considered by the medical community”1. It has been shown that multispecies probiotics are more effective than monostrain or multistrain probiotics, since multispecies probiotics are able to act on all three levels of the gastro-intestinal tract.
